But Aphasia and its impact on identity 13 my verbal memory is much better in the second language than it is for my mother tongue. I’ve got a complicated family history and this led to an equally complicated relationship with my language and identity. I had for a long time a disjointed view of it. After my stroke I wanted to change my identity for a number of reasons. Until my stroke I was a successful professional in the field of education. Privately I was known for being funny and quick witted.
Within a month I had the perfect Nottingham accent. I can’t remember having any difficulties with language during those years. I switched easily between all three identities. The problem arose when the separate worlds met. I spoke my ‘true’ voice, the accent of Strabane, when at home at my sister’s house, and I spoke another vernacular outside at school. When my friends came home, both worlds collided under the watchful eyes of my sister and her husband, or so I imagined. I felt an impostor, living a double life/identity once more, pretending to be English outside of the home, Irish inside of home and Panjabi somewhere else.
So why is there so little discussion of the effects of aphasia on inner language and inner life? There are several reasons for this neglect. First, there are the methodological difficulties of investigating inner language and thinking. Second, people with aphasia have been given few opportunities to introspect and share their experiences (see Parr et al. 1997; Ireland and Black 1992). Third, certain assumptions about aphasia have got in the way of more detailed investigations of the relationship between aphasia, inner language and thinking.
